Heron Maiden (Sagi Musume)

Performed at Joyce SoHo in New York, 1999.

Heron Maiden (Sagi Musume) is a Kabuki dance originally performed in 1762. The dance expresses human emotions of unrequited love, its imagery of a white heron in the snow and in hell reflects both emotional torment and the Buddhist warnings against excessive desire in the feudal era.
