The Japanese bamboo flute, the shakuhachi, is associated with Zen Buddhism from 16th century Japan. Playing Honkyoku pieces is sometimes referred as Sui-zen (blowing Zen), and focuses on breath, stillness, and concentration with the mind of Za-zen (sitting Zen meditation). I discovered the Gaia Hypothesis, an idea that took hold of me and never let go. Gaia comes from Greek mythology; she was the goddess that personified the Earth. The Gaia Hypothesis is the idea that Earth and all of its biological and ecological systems form one single entity. Whether you believe it or not, understand it or not, one must at least acknowledge how deeply we are interconnected with the world around us. Humans and other beings, both sentient and non-sentient, cannot exist without others. Chains of events affect everything on the earth, both in positive and negative ways, and climate change has now become the most pressing matter. The very interconnectedness that defines us has the power to destroy us. And although it is not as well known, Pavlova influenced the New Dance Movement in 1920s in Japan. My guest, Julia Kulakova, performed a Russian Gypsy dance while my dancers from my company presented Oharagi Odori, from the Ayako-mai repertory. Although the program focused on the unarguable contribution of female itinerant performers in Japanese performing arts history, it confirmed the importance of honoring the roots of Japanese dance. Okuni, the founder of Kabuki, was one of those female itinerant performers. Lacking permanent theaters, performers used to tour as itinerants from village to village until a stable theater system was established in the mid-1600s. Following Okuni’s sensational success in 1603, women’s kabuki troupes, called On’na Kabuki (Women’s Kabuki) flourished and travelled around the country. Ayako-mai is the name of the repertory that has been handed down through centuries in two villages in the valley of On’na-dani, in Nigata Prefecture. The two villages share almost the same repertory, but with differences in styles, movements, and lyrics. I heard a lot of talk from each village claiming, “Our way is the correct way!” when I visited to learn the dances in 1975. During the rehearsal, the night before the performance, the choreographer for Takaharada village, came up to me and said, “We are short of hands. Why don’t you help tomorrow… something like make-up?” “Oh? Me? I choreographed the dance in a contemporary style rather than a classical one. I was extremely happy with the result as the students I chose from audition performed so beautifully. It was also a lot of fun to go to local stores and choose fabric for costumes with the director of the costume department. I was very lucky to be invited to teach at a college that has such well-established and longstanding theater and dance departments. They make every effort to create the best college production possible and present them with great pride. And students at Stephens College were all so genuinely eager to learn Japanese dance, while I had wonderful time teaching them. I had the wonderful opportunity to teach a class there for a few years that was made up entirely of Japanese and Japanese American students. At the time, I was still learning about the rich cultural diversity in the Brooklyn community, so discovering such a strong Japanese presence was both surprising and inspiring. I was especially fascinated to see that many of the students, though of Japanese heritage, did not speak the language — a beautiful reminder of how diverse and unique each student's background can be. It was an eye-opening and rewarding experience that deepened my appreciation for cultural identity and the many forms it can take. I loved performing with Juana Cala and dancing to the Flamenco guitar played by Jose Moreno. For our creation, we exchanged standard instruments: Her dance was accompanied by Shamisen, played by Sumie Kaneko, while mine was accompanied by Flamenco guitar. Each of us danced expressing love in our own tradition, but united happily at the end. Nodding to the musicians as I turned back, the signal for the musicians to move on to the last phrase of music and the dancers’ final steps and pause, was such a fun moment. There was one thing I was quite worried about in presenting this program: the stage floor. Juana had great stamping power, and I feared that the gallery floor might be damaged. I was so worried about this that I increased my insurance premium. However, there was no damage after our performance, not even the slightest scar. We examined how and why each style approaches walking differently, shaped by cultural and social influences. I demonstrated how lowering and grounding the body’s center of gravity creates the signature gliding walk of Japanese dance. I then delved into the cultural reasoning behind these movements—insights familiar to dance and theater scholars, as well as ethnomusicologists in Japan, but often unknown to broader audiences. Among my favorite topics to share during school and cultural institution programs are the etymology of Japanese dance terms—mai, odori, and buyo, —along with reflections on the country’s insularity, geography, architecture, and agricultural traditions. To deepen this sacred atmosphere further, I incorporated Shakyo, the meditative practice of copying Buddhist sutras into the costumes. My guest was Wataru Ohashi, Founder of Ohashiatsu (the Ohashi Method). His charismatic presence encouraged many audience members to participate. Pairing strangers seated side by side to practice shiatsu techniques sparked laughter and connection, while exploring Iki proved to be engaging. I demonstrated how Iki is used to convey emotion in Okinawan women’s dance. In portraying sadness, subtle breath supports the graceful flow of movement, but it must remain hidden from view, felt rather than seen. Iki (breath with intention) and Kokyu (breath as physical function) form an expansive topic across the performing arts. For the Salon Series, I could only touch on the related practices in two programs that featured Karate, and Okinawan men’s dance, the dance form influenced by Karate, in Salon Series No.12 and Salon Series No. 29. This shift led to the introduction of other cultural traditions, even if they were not directly tied to dance but were deeply rooted in Japanese traditions including traditional flower arrangement and tea ceremony. In Salon Series No. 56: Ikebana (Traditional flower arrangement), my company dancers and I presented flower themed classical dances: Shikunshi (The Four Noble Flowers), Aki no Iro-kusa (Flowers in the Autumn), and Shiki no Hana (Flowers in Four Seasons. In Salon Series No. 57: Chanoyu/Sado (the Japanese tea ceremony), I danced Cha Ondo (Tea Ceremony Song), accompanied by live music by Masayo Ishigure and Mutsumi Takamizu to complement the demonstration and deepen the audience’s cultural experience. Regardless of cultural, racial, or physical differences, let us overcome these boundaries and work together.” One of the programs that embodied this vision was Salon Series No. 65: On the Human Spirit. It was a multidisciplinary collaboration featuring poetry, dance, music, and sign language. Inspired by Ishigaki Rin’s poem Taiyo no Fumoto de (At the Foot of the Sun), the program began by portraying the world we live in as a beautiful place, blessed by the sun. The performance began by celebrating the beauty of our world, blessed by sunlight. Through poetry and singing, we expressed wonder and gratitude.
